Foursquare/Swarm Update

Added on by Chris Saad.

I like the new Swarm update. Thanks Denis Crowley.

Turns out I've been to 9 countries since I started using Foursquare/Swarm. I wonder how many cities.

I think there's still a big opportunity around visualIzing all of the metadata we've collected about ourselves from wearables and social over the years.

Now I just wish I could have more friends on Swarm. 1000 friend limit is too few.

Netflix vs Disney Streaming

Added on by Chris Saad.

Wow this news of Disney pulling movies from Netflix is huge. It was inevitable though. As Netflix started becoming more of a vertically integrated media company rather than just a 'window' (industry jargon for distributor of content) then it was going to start scaring other studios/ecosystem players off. They also validated the model which inspires others to try their hand at doing the same thing and cut out the middleman.

Disney, on the other hand, has much of the best content being produced in the Hollywood system so they were either going to buy Netflix or build their own.

So what's the future? We're going to have to pay/subscribe to each of these point services (CBS All Access, Disney Stream, Netflix, Hulu, HBO etc).

In that world, the aggregation will happen at the Device/OS level. This is good news for Android TV and Apple TV.

Some tricks for a great conference

Added on by Chris Saad.
  • Amazing speakers (duh)

  • Amazing speakers & influencers only track

  • Walk on/off music

  • Amazing space and with clear sound

  • Accommodation attached/very close to the amazing space

  • Make sure the talks are short and packed with info

  • A separate and sound isolated lobby to allow people to mingle without disturbing the talks

  • (Key) Hard core investment In filming and streaming - treat it like a TV production with the attendees as simply a studio audience

  • Urban -> +Suburban

Do the math.

What will our kids laugh at us about?

Added on by Chris Saad.

The other day I was hanging out with some people at Dragon Forum and we ended up doing an impromptu thought experiment:

Finish the sentence "Our kids will say 'I can't believe your generation used to..."

My answer was "I can't believe your generation used to... manually map metadata to the real-world by looking down at a phone and up at the world over and over"

And now this: Link

Google's brave new friendless feed

Added on by Chris Saad.

A lifetime ago (2006-2008) I worked on an "Attention Management Platform" that would determine your interests and give you a Feed of news and notifications that looks almost exactly like how the Twitter desktop and mobile clients eventually came to look. We were called crazy because "no one would read news in a Feed".

Later, I also wrote a piece about what Google should do with Google+. I included pulling the "Feed" out of the social network and baking it into core Google products to drive maximum distribution. I also suggested seeding with "stories" from core Google products. I was told at the time that it was circulated widely within Google.

A surprising number or my suggestions have come partially true (see original post: http://chrissaad.com/…/my-suggestions-for-googles-social-pr…}.

And now this... Google's brave new friendless feed
